Windows 10 PIN Not Working After Update: Signing In When Your Code Is Rejected

The four digits you have typed every morning for years are suddenly refused. Windows 10 PIN not working after update may show “Something went wrong and your PIN isn’t available” or simply say the PIN judolbet88 is incorrect.

A PIN is part of Windows Hello and is stored securely on the device. Updates sometimes disturb the folder or security chip settings that hold it.

Your account password still works, and it is the way in. After that, the PIN can be recreated in a minute.

Why This Happens

A PIN fails after an update for these reasons:

  • The PIN’s stored data was corrupted during the update.
  • The security chip, known as the TPM, was reset or its settings changed.
  • The update changed sign-in policies.
  • Num Lock is off, so the number pad is not entering digits.

The Num Lock explanation is more common than it sounds on desktop keyboards.

Start With These Basic Checks

Sign in another way.

  1. Check Num Lock, or use the number row above the letters.
  2. On the sign-in screen, select “Sign-in options” beneath the PIN box.
  3. Select the key icon and sign in with your account password.
  4. Alternatively, select “I forgot my PIN” and follow the prompts, which require your Microsoft account password and a verification code.
  5. Make sure the PC is connected to the internet for the reset to work.

Once you are on the desktop, the PIN can be replaced.

Going a Step Further

Remove and recreate the PIN.

  1. Open Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
  2. Select Windows Hello PIN and choose Remove. Confirm with your password.
  3. Select Add and create a new PIN.
  4. Sign out and test it.
  5. If Add fails with an error, restart the PC and try again after installing pending updates.

For a PIN that still cannot be added, the stored PIN folder may need clearing. An administrator can delete the contents of C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Ngc after taking ownership of it, then add a new PIN. That step removes PINs for all users on the PC.

A Word of Caution

Clearing the Ngc folder also removes fingerprint and face sign-in data, which will need setting up again. Do not clear the TPM from the BIOS or Windows Security unless you have your BitLocker recovery key, since doing so can lock an encrypted drive.

Final Thoughts

A PIN that stops working after an update has usually lost its stored data. Sign in with your password, remove the old PIN, and add a new one. Keep your account password memorised, because it is always the fallback.
